Based on roofing cold storage facilities since 1969, Central Coating Company's proprietary Freezerthane™ System, spray polyurethane foam (SPF) and vapor retard coating system, has proven performance on hundreds of cold storage facilities and tanks.

In the spring of 2004, CCC used the Freezerthane™ System, spray polyurethane foam (SPF) and vapor retarder coating system, to re-roof two cold storage plants for United States Cold Storage. Located in Sacramento and Union City, the total roof area is 382,000 sq. ft.

The original built-up roofing (BUR) was allowing both liquid water and water vapor to enter the freezers. Since the installation of the new roof system which included extensive repairs of the roof to wall vapor barrier transition, there have been no leaks. The extensive ice and frost buildup inside the rooms has dissipated.

Mitigating these problems was the primary reason for re-roofing and these goals have been accomplished to our client’s complete satisfaction.

The SPF roof system also upgrades the insulation performance of the buildings.

• The 1.5 inch thick seamless cap of SPF adds an additional R value of 10.
• The foam cap breaks the thermal shorts through the existing insulation system caused by screws and/or joints between the separate pieces of insulation.
• Once the water and water vapor intrusion have been stopped, the existing insulation dries out thus increasing the effective R-value.
• The white topcoat of the coating system reduces the summer daytime “Delta T” by up to sixty degrees, making the entire insulation package more effective.

A review of electricity bills from before and after the Union City project suggests a savings of $8,000.00 per month. This equates to recovering the entire cost of the new roof in approximately 6 years.
